Start Challange
A flat composition can feel lifeless and hard to engage with. Depth creates a sense of immersion, realism, and visual interest, drawing the viewer into your artwork. This challenge will help you develop a stronger spatial structure by learning to arrange elements in layers and control atmospheric perspective.
By understanding how objects relate to each other in space, you'll transform your compositions from flat to dynamic and engaging.

Learn
Mastering balance requires understanding how to distribute elements evenly or purposefully disrupt symmetry for creative impact. Study the following article:
Exercise – Building Depth in Your Composition
Now that you understand balance, it’s time to apply it. The goal is to train your eye to arrange elements harmoniously while considering weight, positioning, and movement.
Start by sketching three small and quick thumbnails (10 minutes each), keeping them simple—focus on structure rather than details. Each thumbnail should incorporate at least two of the following balance techniques:

- Symmetrical Balance
- Create a composition where elements are evenly distributed on both sides of an axis. This method creates stability, formality, and order, making the composition feel structured and harmonious.

- Asymmetrical Balance
- Arrange elements in a way that creates visual equilibrium without mirroring each side. Use contrast, color, or size variation to balance different parts of the image dynamically.

- Radial Balance
- Place elements around a central focal point, radiating outward in a structured yet visually engaging way. This method draws the viewer’s attention to the center while maintaining a balanced feel.
Self-Feedback
Now, analyze your sketches and reflect on how effectively you've created depth. Answer these questions honestly to refine your artistic approach:
- 1. Does the composition feel visually stable and intentional?
- ________________
- 2. Is there a clear sense of weight distribution between elements?
- ________________
- 3. Which type of balance works best for your chosen subject?
- ________________
- 4. Does the composition guide the viewer’s eye in a structured way?
- _______________
Take your time, evaluate your work, and choose the thumbnail that best represents strong visual balance. You’re building something great—keep going!
Final Artwork
Now, it’s time to take your best thumbnail and transform it into a fully developed artwork!
→ Select your strongest thumbnail.
→ Refine your sketch, keeping the balance techniques intact.
→ Apply your artistic style.
→ Enhance balance using contrast and visual weight.
→ Finalize with details and polish.
Now that you’ve laid the groundwork, it’s time to build upon it. This step will challenge you to refine your approach, make stronger decisions, and push your artistic understanding further. Stay open to learning and trust the process.

With each step, your work is evolving. Now, you’ll start adding depth to your skills, exploring how different elements work together to create stronger, more intentional results. Focus, experiment, and let creativity guide you forward.

You’ve come this far, and now it’s time to fine-tune your approach. This step will help you bring clarity to your work, strengthening your decision-making and refining your creative instincts. Stay committed and keep pushing forward.
